Sainsbury’s is a supermarket chain based in the UK. They sell mainly food and groceries, electrical goods and clothes but they also have interests in property and banking.
John James Sainsbury and his wife Mary Ann set up the first Sainsbury’s store in 1869. It was situated in Holborn, London.
Until 1995 Sainsbury’s was the market leader in the supermarket sector. From then until 2003 Sainsbury’s was second to Tesco’s, and then knocked to third by Asda. There are three different types of supermarket that are owned by J Sainsbury PLC.
Altogether there are 20 Sainbury's stores within the Greater Manchester area which are split into 'Supermarkets' for the larger type stores, 'Local' which are more convenience type stores operating in more smaller towns and 'Central' are usually central to towns/cities, below you'll find examples of these in Manchester.
