SUPERMARKETS
In 1965, Asda was formed by two people, Peter Asquith and Noel Stockdale, by merging two ideas which were Peter Asquith’s butchery shop and Arthur Stockdale’s Associated Dairies & Farm Stores. They decided on the name ASDA by taking the first two letters of ‘Asquith’ and the first letter from ‘Associated’ and ‘Dairies’ to make ASDA.
In 1966, ASDA opened a further two stores which showed that Asda’s growth was improving quickly. 2 years later, Peter Asquith made a bold move and acquired the G.E.M discount operator for no price at all. The G.E.M stores were financially failing and Asda managed to improve their £6,000 revenue a week and turn it in to a £30,000 weekly intake, £5,000 more than Peter Asquith had estimated. In 1989, the George brand was created.
The introduction of the George clothing line was brought in to 65 Asda stores and shortly after, Asda took over 61 Gateway stores, taking the total stores to 192. The next big step for Asda was the merger between Asda and the Wal-Mart family for £6.7bn and the pace has increased since then for the superstore.
